The Catalogues

The catalogues in this database have been drawn together over the last 3 years by archivists working for, or in, the 15 repositories involved in the project. These repositories all hold waterway-related records. Some have very few, others hold thousands. The level of detail provided in the catalogues varies. Some contain great detail, including references to people and places mentioned in them. Others contain summary information on the records they describe.

If names of people, companies or other groups do not appear in a catalogue it does not mean they are not mentioned in a document at all. Some catalogues are less detailed than would now be expected. If you require more information about the content or some archives, you should contact the relevant record office: contact details are available from search results or from the Virtual Waterways partners page.
